Peridot for August

We are well into August now so it is time to take a look at Peridot the birthstone for August.

Peridot, also known as chrysolite, is an ancient gem quality formed from the mineral olivine and a silicate mineral with the formula of (Mg, Fe)2SiO4.

It is green yellow in colour, the green is dependent on the iron content within the structure of the gem.

it has a hardness of 6.5 - 7 on Mohs scale.

Considered to be one of the most ancient gems in the world Peridot has links with the ancient Egyptians.

Peridot is found within the upper mantle of the earth, inside volcanic lava, encased in molten rocks and has even been found in meteors and comet dust.

Nowadays it is still found in Egypt, Mexico, USA , Australia, Norway, Myanmar and Pakistan along with a few other parts of the world.

Peridot is thought by some to provide strength and balance to the wearer, as well as bringing peace, health and rest by harmonizing the mind and body. It is also thought to boost creativity and improve your mood.

As with most gemstones some people consider it to hold various health benefits too.

I currently have a couple of peridot pieces available from my shop
