Sapphire - a gemstone for September

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

It is September already, how this year is flying by! It is now time to take a look at the birthstone for September - Sapphire. Probably my favourite gemstone as it features in my own engagement ring.

Sapphire is a precious gemstone, it is a variety of the mineral corundum, consisting of Aluminium oxide and contains a number of trace elements including titanium, magnesium and iron along with others.

It is usually a blue colour, but also occurs in a rainbow of colours including shades of yellow, orange, green, purple, grey and black.

More often than not natural sapphires are cut and polished into gemstones which are set into jewellery such as mine and many millions of other engagement rings.

Sapphire is the third hardest gemstone after diamond and moissantite, measuring 9 on Mohs scale.

Sapphire deposits can be found in many parts of the world, the main areas being Australia, parts of Middle East, and Asia and various African countries along with the United States and South America. It seems as though the highest quality stones come from Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Madagascar
